Assessing Musical Performance

Understanding the way ABRSM exams are assessed will support the entire exam journey for you and your pupil, from preparation right through to the exam itself, and beyond to getting the most from the mark form. You'll gain helpful insights into the aspects of musical performance that you and your pupils need to consider to work effectively towards an ABRSM exam. The session will also explain the principles behind the exam structure and how it works and, using recorded examples, how examiners apply the ABRSM marking criteria to assess each section of the exam. You will come away with a clear understanding of how the mark form comments are intended to help support and guide your pupils’ future musical development.

This workshop is free to attend, please book ahead to secure your spot.

About your presenter
Michael Gale was born in East Yorkshire, England and was a pupil at the independent school Hymers College in Hull.  During this time, he made several journeys every month to West Yorkshire for piano lessons with the late Dame Fanny Waterman, co-founder of the prestigious Leeds International Piano Competition.  He also enjoyed playing trombone and euphonium in brass bands throughout Yorkshire and beyond.  After completing his A-levels, he went on to study for a degree in Music at The University of Surrey, where he specialised in Piano Performance and Composition, as well as taking a keen interest in the music of Indonesia, enjoying weekly trips to London’s South Bank Centre to learn Javanese Gamelan.

Following graduation, Michael was appointed Director of Music at a large independent boarding school in Devon, before marrying and relocating to Scotland where he still enjoys living with his family and teaching in schools, as well as performing as often as time allows.  Other hobbies include hill-walking, foreign travel, languages and taking flying lessons, and he is a keen supporter of Hull City Football Club.

Michael is always keen to encourage musicians to achieve their full potential, and as a member of ABRSM’s practical and jazz examining panels, has travelled throughout Europe and South East Asia over the past 17 years.  Michael is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and this is his first trip to Thailand.
