Music in the US College Application
Wednesday 4 November 2026, 10:30 am ET / 7:30 am PT / 3:30 pm UK
What could music look like for your students at a US university? They might want to major or minor in music, pursue musical theatre, keep playing alongside another subject, or show how years of musical achievement have prepared them to study something entirely different. How can you help them find the right route and make the most of what they've already achieved?
In this two-part Zoom series, each with a live Q&A, we'll explore the application process, the opportunities available at different institutions, and the ways music can continue to be part of university life.
Jennifer Blask, Director of International Admissions at the University of Rochester, will explain how music fits into a holistic review and where students can include it in the Common App. She'll explore how musical achievement, and the time and independent learning behind it, can demonstrate qualities such as commitment and perseverance, whatever your students plan to study.
Following Jennifer's presentation, representatives from four institutions will share what makes their university or college distinctive and the ways students can study, play and perform music there, whether as a major or minor, or alongside another subject:
- University of Michigan
- University of Maryland
- University of Rochester
- Westminster Choir College, Rider University
The session will close with a live Q&A with the panel.
Music teachers and school teachers are warmly welcome, as are students and parents, whether you're supporting applicants from overseas or in the US. Each session stands on its own, but we'd love you to join us for both.
ABRSM Recognition Manager Christine Miller-Odell will host both sessions. You'll also be able to download our guide to how ABRSM exams are recognised by US colleges and universities, including where they may count towards credit, which is a handy reference when advising your students.
